KIM HYUN JOON
THE PROVOCATEUR
THE ART OF INTERROGATION
FINDING OUT THE TRUTH
BEHIND THE LIES
SONG YOO KYUNG
STOCKHOLM SYNDROME
Kim Hyun Joon and Team Leader Kang visited Yoon Jeong Sub’s flat but they were met at the door by his wife. She tried hastily to button up her blouse. It seemed she was trying to hide the bruises on her chest and hands.

They were invited inside. Team Leader Kang was thoroughly observant. Nothing escaped his eyes.
The scrupulously clean and flawlessly organised apartment was well-decorated.

Kim Hyun Joon questioned her about the recent happenings in her husband’s life and whether she knew Kang Jae Deok who had recently passed away.
She wanted to know why they were looking for her husband.

The Team Leader asked casually if she felt the hot since he noticed that she was wearing a long-sleeved shirt in the hot weather.

📷
📷
Noticing some empty bottles of soju in the storeroom, Kim Hyun Joon asked whether she liked drinking, to which she positively admitted.Â
📷
📷
📷
📷
Kang Gi Hyeon described his observations. The apartment was spick-and-span and systematically organised. There were mirrors everywhere. There were traces of a sadist all around. A controlling personality. He observed that she had buttoned up her shirt to hide her bruises, signs of being battered by her husband.

Kim Hyun Joon was certain that she was being trained to be helpless.Â
‘Do you think she has Stockholm Syndrome?’ the younger profiler asked. She must have developed romantic and sympathetic feelings for her criminal husband.
📷
📷
The more experienced profiler agreed that it was that syndrome. Song Yoo Kyung probably believed that if her husband, Yoon Jeong Sub, was arrested, she would lose a life- support. Was it possible that their analysis was wrong?
📷
📷
📷
Since it was difficult to get her cooperation, Kim Hyun Joon offered to hide in his SUV and wait for the criminal to return home.
📷
📷
📷
In the meantime, the younger profiler prowled around and made some observations. He waited for the criminal for a long time to appear but to no avail.Â
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
The police backup came but they discovered that the woman had escaped. They postulated that she had gone to be with her husband to inform him of the latest happenings.Â
Their fear was that the criminal would resort to extreme measures, and Kwon Yoo Jin, the abductee, would be in great danger.

AN UNEXPECTED VISITOR
But, Team Leader Kang had a surprise visitor. She was Song Yoo Kyung, the supposedly battered wife of the suspect, Yoon Jeong Sub.
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
The woman narrated her story to the NCI team that she had rushed to meet up with her husband to tell him the truth. Instead, she was pathetically beaten up.Â
She confessed that she loved him. She claimed that he was kind and treated her well when he was sober but when inebriated, he would beat her up.

Out of the ordinary, Ha Sun Woo mentioned Song Yoo Kyung’s ring which resembled the one worn by the dead abductee, Jo Eun Jung and her mother.Â
She mentioned that the mother and her daughter had worn matching rings, a symbol of the strong bond between parent and child.
📷
When Ha Sun Woo mentioned that her ring belonged to the victim, the woman quickly snatched the ring out of her finger and threw it on the floor.Â
Song Yoo Kyung divulged that  it was her husband's birthday present to her not so long ago.
📷
Meanwhile, Kim Hyun Joon, having received news that Yoon Jeong Sub was playing cards in a gambling den, took the criminal by surprise and forcefully arrested him. In the suspect’s van were many incriminating tools and a mask that was similar to the one won by the torturer in the video.

Song Yoo Kyung was well aware of her husband’s arrest as she had seen him being brought to the NCI headquarters for questioning.
📷
📷
When Yoon Jeong Sub was isolated in the interrogation room, he did not feel in the least nervous. They believed that he had a dominant personality and they would have a hard time wheedling him into imparting any vital information. Such personalities would have been prepared for all eventualities, especially when caught or trapped in such circumstances.

On the screen, Â which was mounted on the wall, images of his victims, dead or possibly still alive, were being displayed - Kim Hae Jin, Choi Eun Seo, Lee Ji Soon. Jo Eun Jung and Kwon Yoo Jin.
📷
📷
The Team Leader instructed that the air conditioner in the interrogation room be turned off and the lights be dimmed.Â
Lee Han explained that it was a form of psychological interrogation or torture. Bright lights morphed into complete darkness. Heat replaced by coldness. Drastic Humidity and temperature changes. Ha Su Woo nodded.
They had to create an environment with unexpected changes to disorientate the criminal and make him nervous. Evocation of fear and uncertainty.

KIM HYUN JOON
THE ART OF INTERROGATION
Kim Hyun Joon was interested to know whether the Team Leader was going in. If they wanted to find out where Kwon Yoo Jin was, they had to make him slip up.
The profiler, who was full of initiative and enthusiasm, offered to go in to provoke the suspect.
📷
📷
KIM HYUN JOON
THE PROVOCATEUR
📷
Interrogative methods. What were his options? Unlike Team Leader Kang who had used rough, crude and aggressive questioning techniques, Kim Hyun Joon intended to use the soft and friendly approach. Hardened criminals would prefer shouting, screaming, and the pounding of desks by interviewers and interrogators.
Kim Hyun Joon was going to be a provocateur; he would assume a calm, friendly and unhurried manner. His technique was even more fearsome to criminals, who were accustomed to toughness and violence.
This profiler was wily, like the intelligent fox. He brought in a big box, apparently full of files concerning the case. Kim Hyun Joon intended to play an elaborate game of ‘cat and mouse’ to trap him. Pretend to give the suspect some evidence of his crime and then, stop from giving more.
📷
The play of light and darkness illuminated as well as cast shadows across the faces of the interrogator and the criminal. The interrogation seemed to come alive as the light and shadows dance on their facial features and deepened their expressions with slight physical movements.
Provocation. But, Kim Hyun Joon was not going to bellow like a bull. Nor was he going to bark like a dog. When dealing with hardened criminals, one thing that unnerved them was gentleness.Â
The smile, that wreathed the profiler’s face, dripped honey.
📷
A ginormous smile. Smiling eyes. Trying to build rapport with the criminal, he asked the criminal about his mood.Â
Placing the box on the table, he stood there in a dominant position. There was no invasion of the criminal’s personal space but the man was visibly agitated.
‘How do you feel?’ the profiler gushed pleasantly. Was the criminal going to respond, ‘Fine, Mr Interrogator’?  He refused to respond. Perhaps Kim Hyun Joon’s face was floating in and out of his focus in the dim lights and the changing temperatures.Â
📷
It seemed Kim Hyun Joon, like the crafty businessman, was trying to stroke his favourite client with his pleasantries. It was sure to needle the man under pressure. Those looking on might find it humorous. If everyone wasn’t so tense, they probably would not help but snigger.Â
The suspect, whose heart must have been hammering hard, pretended not to notice his presence. His look was one of nonchalance; his mood, passive.
Well, he had got the short end of the stick. He was the criminal in the subservient situation while the interrogator, who was on the right side of the law, was the authority figure.
The profiler was apparently immensely entertained by the arrogant demeanour of the other fellow who had put on an air of toughness. He did not doubt that the bad guy had an uneasy conscience.
Kim Hyun Joon intended to deliver a monologue, and then deal the criminal a blow.
📷
The profiler pretended to look at his sheaf of notes. At last, when he looked up, he pronounced, ‘DNA was found on the victim’s body. It is being processed right now, so the results would be out soon.’ The implication was the DNA was his and the man was guilty. The interrogator's lips curved into a smile. He looked like a calm and unruffled father who was staring down at his naughty little son.
📷
There was no threat in Kim Hyun Joon’s easygoing tone. The focus of the profiler’s attention was on the tense man. He stared straight into the eyes of man. In the dim light, the shadows that played around the profiler's eyes accentuated his intense and penetrating gaze. They served to make his eyes look bigger than they actually were.
📷
📷
📷
📷
‘We have evidence too,’ he continued in a controlled manner while whipping out a pair of pliers enclosed in plastic. The suspect refused to look up. It demonstrated his guilt. Undeterred, Kim Hyun Joon sat down and pushed the evidence across the table.
📷
📷
The suspect looked up when Kim Hyun Joon posed his confrontational questions.Â
‘Was this what you had used? Did you enjoy seeing women in pain when you ripped out their finger nails?’Â
Kim Hyun Joon kept smiling. One could bet that all the criminal wanted to do was to wipe the annoying smiles off his face. The interrogator’s eyes bored into the very soul of the murderer. It was not a question and answer session. The loaded questions, being rhetorical ones, were meant to wear down the suspect.
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
The man was not the easiest suspect to crack. It was interesting to note that the suspect, smiling ever so slightly, stared back at his opponent.Â
📷
Noticing his response, the profiler leaned slightly towards the suspect and laced his fingers of both hands together in a confident manner. The profiler’s lips had curved into a wicked smile.
📷
With mockery in his eyes, he toyed with his words, ‘What’s that expression? Crime Confession?Do you admit doing it?’ That question, designed to provoke him further, was effective in evoking a response from him. Kim Hyun Joon had pressed the right buttons. The desired effect was achieved. He, Kim Hyun Joon, eyeballed the man.
📷
📷
📷
📷
‘Are you accusing me of ripping out the woman’s fingernails just because you found some tools in my car?’  the suspect demanded defiantly.
📷
📷
The profiler’s physical movements were smooth and slick, with the slight arch of body and then the cocked head  and all the while, smirking at the suspect’s bravado.
📷
📷
📷
Then, Kim Hyun Joon righted himself, and in his straight back manner, he referred to his notes once more. His posture was a confident and non-intimidating but the criminal was slouched in his seat.
📷
📷
With a piercing look, the NCI man proclaimed that his dead friend, Kang Jae Deok, had lured the naïve victims, but the one who had kidnapped them was the suspect himself.  ‘The two DNAs were different, meaning Kang Jae Deok killed two girls while the rest were murdered by you. Correct?’
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
📷
The suspect seemed jittery at this stage. Whatever self-confidence he had seemed to have been shattered by the exposure.
Kim Hyun Joon’s tone was so confident and triumphant that all those watching behind the one-way glass panel must have been impressed with his performance.
'Did Kang Jae Deok protest at first?  In order to control him, you ordered him to murder them,’ he egged him on with his soothing tone. Kim Hyun Joon smiled in complacency, knowing that the other man was unnerved.
📷
📷
📷
The suspect sneered haughtily, ‘You’ve watched too many movies, Mr Detective!’ Wow, what an answer! The profiler’s eyes were fixed on him again. Though the man did not shift uneasily in his seat, his expression had changed.Â
Not wanting to be distracted, Kim Hyun Joon let it slide and ignored his objections.
📷
📷
Then, Kim Hyun Joon flicked a photograph out of his file and pushed it towards him. ‘You worked at S Culture Club with Kang Jae Deok, right?’ It implied that the suspect was also in the pornography business. Was it even offensive to the suspect’s unrefined sensibilities?
📷
📷
📷
📷
Surprsingly, the suspect taunted the profiler. Knowing that his former partner in crime was already dead and was not a threat to him, he asked snidely, ‘Kang Jae Deok. What’s he doing these days?’
📷
📷
The profiler smiled, leaned foward and stared at him cynically. The murderer lacked a conscience.Â
‘Yoon Jeong Sub, listen carefully, we have plenty of evidence, so you’d better quit that useless pretence!’
📷
📷
📷
📷
The criminal also leaned forward aggressively and hissed, ‘Then, follow the law!’ He did not easily crumble under pressure.Â
📷
Although the foxy Kim Hyun Joon was unable to obtain a confession out of him, he had outwitted the ‘wolf’. He had succeeded in needling him and eliciting verbal-cum-non-verbal behavioural patterns from the provocative session.
📷
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
📷
Those NCI profilers who were watching the whole process realised that Yoon Jeong Sub was purposely acting tough. It was an instinctive defence mechanism. His arrogance was a farce.Â
📷
The NCI viewers were able to compare the two males in the interrogation room. Males in contrast.Â
Yoon Jeong Sub seemed insecure, cowed and lacked self-confidence when juxtaposed against the smiling, confident, calm and level-headed Alpha Male profiler, Kim Hyun Joon who dominated and controlled the entire interrogation session.
The conclusion that they arrived at was Yoon Jeong Sub  was not the primary suspect; he was a subordinate criminal who was subservient  to a more hardened criminal, the dominant partner in those heinous crimes. Yoon Jeong Sub was just somebody's hatchet man.
📷
Team Leader Kang asked suddenly, 'Where's Song Yoo Kyung?'

LEE JOON GI
📷
📷
Lee Joon Gi’s performance, as an interrogative sleuth, is top-notched as usual.Â
Transformation. It is interesting to watch Lee morph from a profiler with a serious demeanour into an smiling interrogator with a suave, easygoing charm.Â
The interrogator’s calm, cool, collected approach, coupled with his smug, knowing smiles, mocking looks and smirks, is indeed more provocative than the rough and aggressive interrogative approach.
📷
The different interrogative method,  which is conducted in a non-belligerent tone, is an intelligent and peaceful approach to elicit verbal and non-verbal responses from the non-dominant suspect. Kim Hyun Joon resembles a wily fox trying to outwit and outmanoeuvre the perverted wolf.
📷
Lee Joon Gi’s impressive performance has not only invaded the audience’s minds but also gripped them tightly and refused to let go. Even uptight viewers who have been waiting their entire lives to watch such enigmatic moments in dramas, would be totally flustered watching his smug look and mocking smiles. A sudden surge of adrenaline could have coursed through the audience’s veins at those particular moments in the drama.
📷
But, their hearts might have sunk when the suspect’s confession was not forthcoming. Is that even important after Lee Joon Gi's entertaining performance? After all, their pulse must have quickened and their stomach must have possibly made many flips while watching him in the exciting and interesting Episode 6.
LIGHT AND DARKNESS
📷
Camera work. The use of light and shadows has produced an interesting but ghoulish picture of the interrogation. Kim Hyun Joon looks psychologically more frightening and sinister with shadows falling on certain parts of his face, particularly his eyes.
📷
The suspect could probably have felt more jittery facing an interrogator who sounded friendly and charming but was apparently a fox baring his teeth at him in the dim light.
