The Giant Buddha statue lies to the east of the city of Leshan in Sichuan Province. According to Internet sources, in 1996, the ‘Mount Emei Scenic Area with Leshan Giant Buddha’ was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the largest Buddha statue in the world, the Leshan Giant Buddha draws millions of tourists and Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world every year. Construction on the Giant Buddha began in 713 AD. It took 90 years to carve the huge Buddha from the first year (713) of the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the 19th year (803) of Emperor Dezong's reign. The Tang Dynasty was, coincidentally, ruled by the Li Royal Family.
According to a historical source, the face of the Leshan Buddha was recut in the early 1900s. Although its original Tang appearance was lost, the original aura of majesty remains intact.
